Eco Eccentric is an offbeat gal’s guide to living a little better each day.
Do I have your attention? Ok, good.
So, what the heck is an Eco Eccentric?
An Eco Eccentric is one who acts as an advocate for eco-conscious views and behavior, in an attempt to preserve and improve the wellness of the planet and all living things that it supports :-) We stray from the beaten path (even though today many paths are at least a little bit beaten) and try to make choices that will have the most positive effect on our bodies, families, homes, work, and social environments, as well as on Earth as a whole. Sometimes others think we are weird, obsessive, or nuts, but we are proud to embrace our eccentricity!
Are you nodding in agreement yet? Excellent.
Who writes for Eco Eccentric?
Currently Eco Eccentric is me—Rebecca, your offbeat editor from the east coast—a real-life, self-proclaimed sporty free thinking bohemian geek who believes that eco-conscious action and consumerism will not only allow us to coexist more peacefully with the planet, but will help us live healthier and more fulfilling lives! As anyone who knows me will tell you, in addition to being picky about the beauty products (well…more like any product) I buy, I am a lover of everything quirky, geeky, fair trade, vintage, and handmade.
I suffer from PCOS, environmental allergies, food allergies, migraines, and asthma. If something triggers my symptoms, I can have horrible mood swings, congestion, sinus pain and pressure, headaches, extreme fatigue, brain fog, blurred vision, chest pain, throat constriction, and/or trouble breathing. And that list only scratches the surface. I carry an EpiPen and an emergency inhaler with me at all times. I don’t enjoy taking prescription drugs, so I am always open to adding different natural remedies to my arsenal. However, to heal what ails me, I am a strong believer in combining both conventional medicine with alternative and holistic approaches. I am currently being treated by a wonderful naturopathic doctor, in conjunction with my medical doctors.
While searching for facial care products back in 2010 that wouldn’t aggravate my already screwy hormonal skin, I stumbled upon a wonderful reference, EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. I realized how many additional chemicals I was adding to an already chemical-laden life just by using mainstream beauty goods.
A compulsive researcher by nature (I am an editor and graphic designer by trade), I began to educate myself about scary environmental toxins. Yes, they are horrifying! I am by no means a purist (just an optimist) and I understand that what each person can do is contingent upon time, resources, and finances, but I believe that every little action is a step in the right direction.
This website is a guide to making a change for the better—for ourselves, our families, the environment, and sometimes just for fun!
Do you want to join my crusade? Don’t worry, I promise it will be the very opposite of dangerous!
